Columbine is native to eastern North America and grows in a variety of forest and woodland habitats. It grows in openings in mesic forests, in dry, oak woodlands, and on rocky or gravelly slopes and bluffs. It is short-lived but re-seeds readily if there is some light and space in the ground layer.
